POETRY rather than pints helped save the Monkey pub in Thurgoland six years and a final poetry evening is to be held as the pub now closes for the last time.

Poet and artist Granville Danny Clarke is returning for a last poetry session at the pub on Yorkshire Day, August 1, before the business goes to make way for development.

The pub's owner Anthony Youel is planning to continue his artistic career in Cornwall and said: "I was so pleased that Danny agreed to return and host the final session –as it was his initial inspiration and encouragement that gave me confidence to express myself with poetry performance and the visual arts and installations."
