GEORGE Roberts has happy memories of the days he played soccer.

“They were good days and I looked forward to playing. It was great and quite exciting to put your boots on when Saturdays came around.”

He played for Lundwood United football team and he has been able to supply a photograph of the team when they played against a Cliffe Lane team at Monk Bretton in the early 1950s.

The players who represented Lundwood: back row, left to right: Terry Bannister, Colin Mellor, George Roberts, Albert Mosley, Peter Love. Front row, left to right: Fred Marshall, Cyril Bailey, Jack Chadwick, Ken Wood, Jimmy Schofield, Jack Victory. The young lad kneeling at the front who was the team’s mascot, Malcolm Chadwick. All the lads came from the Lundwood area.

George has a photograph of Albert Sports FC, for which he also played. The photograph was taken in 1947 the team being: back row, left to right: R Smith, A Booty, J Hargreaves, L Mellor, J Auswich, S Ogley. Front row, left to right: G Roberts, L Peach, G Broadhurst, N Kilner.

Still on the subject of football, following our publication of a photograph of Ardsley Athletic football club we heard from Terry Francis, of Cudworth, who told us his late uncle, John Nightingale Francis, was a member of the team.

He lived with Terry's grandmother at Platts Common. Her maiden name was Anne Nightingale. “I used to see him when I visited with my mother and father. But it is the first time I have ever seen a photograph of him, “ said Terry.
