HEADTEACHERS at Barnsley’s secondary schools will meet with council bosses this month to discuss a wrangle over changes to school holidays.

Leaders of the borough’s secondary schools are due to meet for crunch talks with education spokesman Coun Tim Cheetham and service director Rachel Dickinson on June 21.

It follows a revolt by secondary heads over the council’s decision to do away with the traditional six week holidays in favour of a shorter summer break and having an extra week in October starting in 2017/18.

School leaders warned the controversial move for council-controlled schools will cause chaos and have a devastating impact on staff recruitment, exams and cause confusion for parents with children at different schools.

Council bosses gave the go ahead to shake-up the holidays in March. It argued the long summer break can lead to ‘learning loss’.
