HEMINGFIELD Colliery is one step closer to becoming a community asset once again.

The site, on Wath Road, was purchased the Friends of Hemingfield Colliery in July 2014 and since then, the group of volunteers has been working on uncovering the site’s history and restoring it.

In September, the group secured funding from the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership, Association for Industrial Archaeology and Subterranea Brittanica to carry out vital weather proofing and make the winding house building safe, now underway.

Christine Cameron is one of the site directors.

She said: “The winding house has got to be cleaned out and then restored inside. We could have a cafe in there once the roof has been put on. We had to make the roof secure because as a historical building, preservation is of paramount importance.”
