A WOMAN is urging residents to keep an eye out for hedgehogs during bonfire season.

Janet Mason, of Hogwarts Hedgehog Hospital, is asking residents to double check bonfires before lighting them as they create the perfect habitat for hedgehogs.

She said: “We have spent the last few months boosting the numbers of hedgehogs in Barnsley and at this time of year they start to hibernate.

“Bonfires look like suitable accommodation to a sleepy hedgehog and we are asking everyone to check their bonfires to make sure there are no hedgehogs before lighting them.

“Hedgehogs are in decline and there are less than one million left in the UK. We are working hard to protect them wherever we can.”
