A BARNSLEY pub that came under new management last year has been revamped with features taken from the area’s rich history, including a dining room themed on one of the borough’s most successful literary exports.

The Milton Arms in Elsecar is officially open with new owner True North Brew Co completing a ‘careful’ refurbishment that has retained elements of the pub’s history.

The pub also houses a themed dining room inspired by the Barry Hines novel ‘A Kestrel for a Knave’ and its film adaptation, ‘Kes’.

True North Brew Co senior interior designer, Theresa Lang said: “After three decades of history in the pub we wanted to express this within the design concept. The overall idea was to create a traditional pub which retained and enhanced its existing features but felt bigger and cosier at the same time.

“We chose to reuse and refurbish the existing furniture and carefully chose reclaimed additional furnishings so the overall scheme had some continuity whilst delivering edgy style on the second floor.”

Sheffield-based brewery and pub chain True North took over the pub last year after previous landlords Phil and Vikki Hickling two of Barnsley’s longest-serving publicans took the decision to step down after 33 years behind the bar.

The pub is now home to a new bar, with a function room and the ‘Kes’ themed dining room available for event hire and it offers a revamped menu for food and drink.
