A BARNSLEY lad who snapped his shin bone after tumbling 20ft down a quarry has undergone surgery to rebuild his leg.

Luke Batley, 21, had been walking down a slope at an old quarry site at Smithies when he lost his footing and slipped, falling down the side of the quarry and smashing his leg on a rock.

He was seriously injured in the tumble and broke the tibia in his right leg.

Doctors fitted an external frame to his leg - which bolts into the bone and realigns it - before undergoing surgery on Wednesday to put metal plates and screws into his leg that will bridge the break so it can heal.

Luke, of Rockingham Close, Birdwell, spoke to the Chronicle from his hospital bed at the Northern General in Sheffield.

He said he has been warned that if the surgery fails he may need to have part of his leg amputated.
