TWO partygoers were lucky to escape serious injury after being hit by a car that smashed through a police cordon on a busy town centre street during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The fun came to a standstill on Wellington Street when a car rammed past a police riot van that had been forming part of a cordon set up by officers in order to make the road a pedestrianised area for the New Year festivities.

The shocking incident happened at about 1.15am on January 1 when a silver Peugeot 206 car broke through the cordon and hit two pedestrians.

A 33-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man suffered minor injuries but a police chief inspector in Barnsley has said it was ‘sheer good fortune’ that no-one lost their lives.
