A CALL for people to watch out for cases of animal cruelty has been made by a local MP.

After a day on the ‘front line’ with the RSPCA, Stephanie Peacock voiced her ‘shock and sadness’ at some of the abuses she saw.

“We all have a duty to be vigilant against abuses of animal welfare,” said the member for Barnsley East, pledging to work closely with the charity to improve care.

Stephanie spent time with a local inspector in Barnsley East to learn more about the work and key animal welfare issues affecting the area.

She saw first hand some of the terrible situations and incidents involving animals as they travelled from Hoyland up to Shafton and Grimethorpe, following up from new calls from the public and existing cases.

In 2017, the RSPCA investigated 1,100 complaints about animal welfare in Barnsley.

Stephanie said: “This was a real eye-opener and I pay tribute to the excellent work that the team at the RSPCA do daily.

“It was fantastic to meet one of our hard -working Inspectors and to thank them on behalf of animal lovers for all they do.

‘However, I was shocked and saddened at some of the cases of cruelty and neglect I saw. We all have a duty to be vigilant against abuses of animal welfare and I will continue to work closely with the RSPCA to help improve standards of animal welfare in Barnsley and across the UK.”
