ALMOST £12m extra could be spent on education in Barnsley under a major government shake-up of how schools are funded.

Barnsley, the worst funded area per head in the country, is set to be one of the big winners under reforms to tackle the ‘postcode lottery’ of school funding under proposals set out by Education Secretary Justine Greening on Wednesday.

She said the system for distributing schools funding across the country is unfair and outdated as a school in Barnsley could receive 50 per cent less than a school facing similar challenges in Hackney in London.

The new national funding formula is designed to stop such inequalities and create a level playing field for schools in different parts of the country, with similar intakes, who receive different levels of per-pupil budget.
