A CONSERVATIVE Party candidate in next week’s local elections has defended himself for pledging his support to his English Democrat rival.

Michael J Davies, who is running to be a councillor in the Rockingham ward, nominated Kevin Riddiough, who is vying for the same position but for the English Democrats.

On official election papers, which show candidates’ details and the persons who nominated them, Mr Davies’ name appears on Mr Riddiough’s list of supporters.

“There’s no misprint in the papers - I backed Kevin’s nomination because I agree with a lot of his policies,” Mr Davies told the Chronicle. “I disagree with some as well, but competition is healthy and it’s all for the good of the area.”
