A PENSIONER spent five days in hospital with severe hand injuries after being savagely mauled by an out of control dog.

Ken Walsh, 73, suffered horrendous wounds including one finger gnawed to the bone, as he struggled to get the frenzied animal to lose its grip on Reg, his daughter's Jack Russell.

After five days in the Northern General Hospital, retired engineer Ken cannot use either of his heavily bandaged hands and has been told he will probably need plastic surgery.

The large dog's owner, who desperately tried to pull the animal off Ken and Reg and was himself injured, has since had it destroyed and offered to pay all the veterinary bills.
