A CLEAN-UP day led by volunteers in Cudworth Park resulted in more criminal damage to a play area and even a war memorial being uncovered by a fed-up councillor.

The park, off Barnsley Road, is entering this summer’s Yorkshire in Bloom competition having fared well previously and Tuesday’s event was the first in a series in the run-up to the judging panel’s arrival next month.

A kids’ climbing frame, a noticeboard and a Battle of the Somme memorial painting were all damaged at some point last week.

Coun Charlie Wraith said: “It’s disheartening as we have a good group of volunteers who work hard in the park.

“The kids’ play area has been targeted countless times but it makes me so angry to see what’s happened to the Somme memorial.

“This is going to take a lot to put right and we need more police patrols in the park to deter the yobs.”
