RESIDENTS of an entire street left without mail for five months after a postal worker was bitten by a dog finally had their service restored.

Royal Mail had refused to deliver to 17 properties on Kays Terrace at Stairfoot since January after the postwoman was bitten. It followed a previous suspension of the service over the same issue.

Residents were angry and frustrated at having to regularly visit the Post Office to collect their mail.

“Sometimes you’d make the trip up there only to find there wasn’t any,” said Harry Charlesworth, 79. “Plus one or two items have gone astray.

“We’ve started receiving mail again this week, so hopefully it’s all gone away.”

Coun Wayne Johnson assisted in sorting out the problems after receiving complaints from residents. “They’ve been up in arms,” he said.

“Hopefully that’s the end of it and we won’t see a repeat, because we have had this issue before.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Deliveries were suspended to 17 addresses on Field Lane and Kays Terrace in January after one of our postal workers was bitten by a dog.

“The safety and welfare of our staff is paramount and we only suspend deliveries as a last resort when the safety of our staff is at risk.

“Deliveries were reinstated following a visit from the local manager, where we were satisfied by the measures put in place by the owner to secure the dog.

“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience this has caused and would like to thank them for their patience on this matter.”
