BUCKINGHAM Palace has has announced that the HRH Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh is retiring from royal duties later this year.
The duke, who turns 96 next month, has visited Barnsley several times during the Queen’s reign.
Next week the Chronicle’s Memories column will recount some of his visits, including the one pictured here, in May 1991, when the Royal couple came to officially open The Metrodome.
He also came with the Queen in the 1950s, and by himself in 1998 when he visited Lundwood.
The decision to step aside from public duties, was made by Prince Philip himself and is supported by the Queen, a palace spokesman said.
We have been at the heart of our community, every week, since 1858. The town and its people have changed dramatically since then but the Chronicle has been a constant.
It’s our belief that news should be available to everyone regardless of their circumstance. But we need a little helping hand to do so.
Production Editor, Ashley Ball, said: "In an ever changing media world, it’s important that news is reported correctly and without any hidden agenda.
Your support allows us to keep holding decision-makers to account and report on everything that happens in the town, good or bad, fairly."
