IMPROVING children’s oral health, getting people to stop smoking and increasing physical activity will be the main focus of the council’s public health team over the next three years.

The public health strategy for 2016-2018 was approved by the council’s ruling cabinet on Wednesday.

It aims to give children the best start in life, reduce health inequalities and ensure everyone enjoys a happy and healthy life.

A report said there were several areas on concern including conceptions in under 18s, obesity in children, poor oral health, smoking prevalence, physical inactivity, maternal obesity and A and E attendances.

Rebecca Clarke, public health officer, “We know we can’t cover everything, that’s why we have picked three priorities. It’s about giving children the best start in life and reducing inequalities.”
