A RARE Oaks Colliery Disaster commemorative mug sold 150 years ago to raise money for the widows left behind will be sold once more to raise money in remembrance of the victims.

England’s worst-ever mining disaster is believed to have killed 383 men and boys in December 1866 when a series of powerful explosions ripped through the ground beneath Stairfoot and Hoyle Mill.

Later this year a new memorial featuring a sculpture by Graham Ibbeson is due to be unveiled in the town centre, but People and Mining is still raising money for the plinth on which it will stand.

A anonymous donor from Darfield has handed over the mug which will be sold next weekend with all proceeds going to the fund.
