A RECORD 285 Barnsley youngsters have taken part in this summer’s National Citizen Service - a rise of 16 per cent since last year - and MP Dan Jarvis is calling for the project to be expanded to take in more Barnsley young people.

NCS sees 15, 16 and 17-year olds spend four weeks in groups with others their age taking part in adventurous outdoor challenges, learning to live independently, and undertaking a community project for a local good cause.

This year they went canoeing, gorge scrambling, abseiling, raft building and orienteering for a week in Cumbria.

After spending a second week living together in small groups on a tight budget having to shop, cook and clean for themselves, they then went on to work on various community projects.
