Young midfielder Dennis Knight has signed for Barnsley on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old was at Newcastle United's academy from the age of eight until earlier this season when he was released. He has been on trial at Oakwell for the last month and impressed in games for the under 21s. Knight is a left-footed attacking midfielder.

After penning the deal at Oakwell, Knight wrote on Twitter: "Happy to have signed for Barnsley FC. Hard work starts now."

Manager David Flitcroft told the Chronicle: "Peter Beardsley has said that Dennis was one of the most talented young players at Newcastle. He has quality and talent but it didn't work out for him up there and he's found himself without a club. I'm hoping he's hit rock bottom and still wants a future in the game and we can help him achieve that at Barnsley."
