RESIDENTS living on a accident blackspot road are urging for something to be done before someone gets killed.

Furlong Road in Bolton-upon-Dearne is a 30mph stretch, running from the Collingwood Hotel to Goldthorpe Medical Centre.

But residents say there is an unusually high level of road accidents on there, particularly around a bend where the road becomes Angel Street.

Tony Austwick, 68, lives on that bend and has had his wall destroyed three times by cars crashing into it.

He said the council even moved the nearby lamppost to be next to his wall because it had been knocked over so many times.

He thinks the problems started four years ago, when the council resurfaced Furlong Road.

Tony said: “Since they did the work we have had a problem where if it slightly rains, it becomes like a skid patch on both bends. We do have an issue with a lot of speeding but this includes one or two cars which have just been going steady. I’ve had my wall down three times and next door has suffered damage too.

“South Yorkshire Police every time an incident happens has it logged, but nothing can done until someone dies - that’s what they said to me.

“I’ve asked the council for speed bumps or something. It is a regular causeway with kids and families walking on there. Someone is going to get killed but it is like knocking your head against a brick wall. All I am bothered about is one day, I might go out and find a mother with her kids dead.”

Tony said he sees a car lose control there every week.

“To me this surface just isn’t right. It doesn’t seem to let the water seep away or it is getting where there is a bit of ice and it becomes a skating rink.

“Mine is right in the line of fire. We’ve even had the council men spreading sand and while that’s happening, had another happen in front of them.

“The council said they had a survey done and found two people speeding. But I see on a daily basis they come round like mad. But there also a lot of people going slow who still lose it.

I’ve lived here 35 years. It has been a thing previously where it was once in a blue moon. But recently it is common. The main worry is someone getting killed. Walls can be put right but lives can’t.“
