PETITIONERS campaigning to make the main road in Great Houghton safer have been set a deadline to get their comments in.

North East Ward councillor Dorothy Higginbottom said she welcomes petitioners dropping their comments through the letter box at her Rotherham Road home, but says they need to have sent them all in by February 27 in order for the council to take them into account.

She also asked for the petition’s organiser to provide their details, which are required for the council to enable a response.

The petition has been created in response to concerns about the speed of vehicles on busy Rotherham Road, which turns into High Street in the village.

Coun Higginbottom said: “The three ward councillors all attended a meeting on December 12 alongside Coun Dorothy Coates, representing the parish council, to look at the possibility of a refuge or crossing on the road. It is not easy as there are so many entrances but it is being looked at.

“I think the petition has been going around a month and one day, I had 26 responses come through my door. I don’t mind them leaving them with me as we are all concerned in Great Houghton. The homes tend to be on one side of the road with amenities on the other which makes it difficult.

“Personally I would prefer a refuge as then you could get part-way across the road and make some progress, rather than be waiting for both sides to be clear. But it is a question of if the road is wide enough for it.”
