Marc Roberts admits he is 'frustrated' that the Reds' recent clean sheets have not brought victories but has backed his attacking team-mates to change that.

Barnsley have kept clean sheets in three of their last four games but have not netted this month after struggling to create and take opportunities in the goalless draw with Wigan on Saturday.

The 26-year-old centre-back said: "The clean sheets are what we look for. If we keep them, we have a great chance of winning because we have quality going forward.

"It is frustrating when we are missing chances but I know our attacking players will come good.  We have got some great players going forward, we have seen it when we beat Wolves 4-0. It won't always click and, when it doesn't, we have to make sure we keep it tight at the back and get at least a draw."

Roberts is known for his long throws, but they have not been used much this season. He said: "We have got more to offer. The throws are there to use if we are chasing the game or if we need to put pressure on. But I don't think we will use it as a number one threat, especially with the attacking players we have."

Roberts was an ever-present this season until an injury sustained a month ago sidelined him for three games.   He recovered during the international break earlier this month and returned to the side for Saturday's goalless stalemate with Wigan Athletic. Roberts, from Penistone, has played 57 games for his hometown club since signing from non-league Halifax Town last year, including on their way to promotion last season.

He said: "It's been a great year.  Barnsley have not been so successful in the last five or six years. It came all at once in the last year and the fans have been a bit spoilt.

"For myself, it's been a very quick rise but I think I have stood up to the test.  I never imagined I would be in this situation. I am thankful Barnsley took the chance on me and hopefully I am repaying them.

"We have all coped with the step up very well. We have had to improve every game. The ball might not come towards you as often at this level but it comes with more quality.

"In League One they might have five chances and score one but, in this league, we have played games when they have had a couple of chances and scored two.  We haven't got any Championship experience but that might work in our favour. The lads are still grafting to improve themselves to get up to that level. We have shown we are capable."

Former Buxton and Worksop defender Roberts formed an excellent partnership with Alfie Mawson, who was then sold to Premier League Swansea City in August. He has since been paired with either Angus MacDonald or Adam Jackson who are younger than him and had not played higher than League Two before this season. Roberts, who is also in his first season in the Championship, said: "They are both good players and I enjoy playing with both of them. When I was out injured, those two did well. We have got three good players there who can step in and do the job."
