A THREAT made to someone at Netherwood Academy meant pupils were ‘detained’ in the Wombwell school on Wednesday.

Parents were notified by text the students would be kept in after normal school closing time at 2.30pm.

A follow-up text then told parents that in the interest of safety and to protect the community, students would be released shortly and they were all safe.

By approximately 3pm, students were on their way home.

A spokesman for the Astrea Academy Trust, which runs the school, said: “There was a threat made by a member of the public to an individual within the school community and we were advised by the police to keep students within school until the situation was resolved.

Meanwhile parents were warned to be careful by the school after a pupil was diagnosed with meningitis.

They were alerted by text yesterday to keep an eye on their children and if they have any concerns, to contact their local GP.

A spokeswoman for Netherwood said: “We have been made aware by a parent that their child has meningitis.

“We will not know for two days if this is the infectious strain, so for health and safety reasons we have alerted parents and recommend that they contact their local GP if they have any concerns.”
