PUPILS from Horizon Community College were given the chance to experience a day in the life of a paramedic as part of a special work experience initiative.

Children in year 9 and year 10 got to climb aboard an ambulance and take a look at some of the equipment used by paramedics.

They were also given a presentation by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on potential careers.

Sharon Swift, programme manager for Made in Barnsley, said: “The day pupils spent with the fantastic staff of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service was an excellent opportunity for them to learn about how valuable our healthcare services are, and consider whether they’ve got what it takes to work in first aid in the future.

“Getting them engaged in thinking about their futures through doing something proactive and a bit different allows young people to gain hands-on experience of work, and consider new career options.

“We hope that this unique opportunity has given Horizon pupils some food for thought!”

The Made in Barnsley initiative gives young people a chance to learn about careers that they would never have considered in the fields of healthcare, engineering and construction.
