A GROUP that supports individuals and their families suffering with Parkinson's has celebrated its tenth anniversary.

Members of the Parkinson's UK Barnsley and District Branch held a lunch last Monday at the Holiday Inn, Dodworth.

Parkinson’s is a degenerative neurological condition that causes tremors, muscle stiffness and slowness in movement. The disease has no known cure.

The Barnsley and District Branch was set up in 2009 and holds counselling sessions, respite care and home visits. The group also launched weekly exercise classes to help elevate the symptoms of Parkinson’s, which has been led by Bronia Warden.

She was recognised during a presentation at the meal, in addition to the group’s long-term members.

Philip Thompson, a member of the group, said: “The presentation and meal went very well and fun was had by all. The class is very popular and has huge health benefits for those with Parkinson's and we’re glad we’ve been able to run it so successfully for the past ten years.”

Referrals to the class are available by contacting Parkinson’s UK local advisor Sharon Gray on 0344 225 3637.
