BEING in the top one per cent of the country for mathematics is a definite plus point for a Darfield school.
Upperwood Academy, on Dartree Walk, received a letter from minister of state for school standards Nick Gibb informing them they were one of the country’s best.
Upperwood pupils achieved 100 per cent for reaching or exceeding the expected maths standard by the end of key stage two.
The letter, addressed to Upperwood headteacher Alistair Budd, said: “We want to ensure that every child has the necessary fluency in mathematics to prepare them for a successful secondary education and beyond, and your school has provided this to all your pupils.
“Thank you for your hard work and professionalism in producing such high standards and congratulations again to you and your staff for all you have achieved.”
Mr Budd credited the pupils with the school’s success.
He said: “Upperwood has always been a high achieving school, particularly in the arena of mathematics. This acknowledgement of our high regard nationally is absolutely wonderful news.
“There is not a school in the country that isn’t striving for their pupils to do their best and we are the same. We have embraced a new curriculum in mathematics which in all honesty has meant a lot of hard work for staff.
“I am therefore thrilled that this hard work has paid off with a result that puts us in the top 160 schools across the country. What an amazing result.
“Our pupils work hard across the whole curriculum, they endeavour to do their best, always. The credit is theirs, well done everyone and Carry On Upperwood.”
