MARKET traders have raised serious concern over a loss of car parking in the new £50 million town centre redevelopment.

There are 624 spaces serving the immediate markets area at present, with 499 in the public multi-storey car park - to be demolished for the new town centre scheme - and a further 125 in the market basement, which are used by traders.

Under the new town centre scheme there will be 385 car parking spaces - up to 170 at the new CEAG car park, 125 under the refurbished Metropolitan Centre, which will be made public, and a further 90 on the former Zero Ice site.

Peter Kwapisz, a trader on Barnsley market since 1969, said the loss of parking was revealed at meeting for traders last Wednesday, attended by council leader Sir Steve Houghton.
