A FOOTBALLER who died after collapsing on the pitch had been given the all-clear to play following a series of medical tests.

Daniel Wilkinson, a centre-back with Shaw Lane AFC, died on Monday after collapsing during the team’s Evo-Stik League Cup clash against Brighouse Town.

He had previously made club staff aware he was having tests, and had fainted during pre-season, but put it down to being dehydrated on a hot day.

Shaw Lane AFC owner Craig Wood said everyone involved with the club was still in shock.

He added: “It’s been horrendous, I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. I was sitting in the stand at the time and saw him go down, but even then you think they’re going to get up as players do, but he didn’t. The severity of it became apparent very quickly.”
