HUNDREDS are expected to turn out and pay their respects at a memorial service for Lord Mason of Barnsley next month.

The veteran politician, who was the first ever Barnsley MP to achieve senior government office, died last month, a day after his 91st birthday.

There will be a special memorial next month at St Mary's church in the town centre.

Lady Marjorie, Lord Mason's widow, says she has been moved and honoured by the hundreds and hundreds of cards and letters she has received over the past few weeks.

"With the help of our two daughters we are trying to reply to as many people as possible, but it is an impossible task although we are doing our very best," she said.

"I hope people understand that my thanks to every single one of them is truly heartfelt."

The service is on Friday June 5, 2pm,.
