WOMBWELL band U3 are all blind and managed to learn their musical instruments without ever being able to see them.

But it never stopped them pursuing their love of music and are currently recording their first album in a recording studio.

Dave Dresser, Val and Maria Spurgeon, of Neville Close, have named their album ‘Old Shep’ after one of their favourite songs. It currently has 12 tracks, but they hope to have 20 when it is finished.

Dave said: “I’ve always loved music and always wanted to make my own record. We started having music lessons with Ian in September 2006. We found his number in Yellow Pages, but we were lucky because he has a recording studio and said we could record an album. I’m very pleased with how it’s going.”

All the tracks are covers of their favourite songs, including Elvis Presley, Jim Reeves, and Freddie and the Dreamers. The name U3 is inspired by Irish rock band U2.

Valerie, 50, plays piano and sings some of the songs. She said: “Being blind makes it a little harder, but I just have to feel where all the notes are. Yes I make one or two mistakes but it’s not too bad. It’s getting better all the time.”
