OLD London Underground trains could be running through Barnsley under plans to plug the gap in the shortage of rolling stock.

Vivarail Ltd, based in Warwickshire, is converting a fleet of 35-year-old London Underground trains as a replacement for ageing Pacer trains.

The Tube stock, designed in 1978, was heading for the scrap heap but has been bought by Vivarail Ltd to be refurbished for potential use on Northern routes, which could include the Penistone Line through Barnsley.

It is understood the first trains could be operational by early 2016 but no deals will be made until the Northern Rail franchise is awarded in October.
