MOVES to merge Barnsley College and Doncaster College have been carrying on ‘behind closed doors for months’ according to a concerned teaching union official.

The Chronicle revealed last week that Barnsley College’s board of governors has agreed to proceed with the recommendations of a government-commissioned review of post-16 education which aims to move towards ‘fewer, larger, more resilient and efficient providers’.

The review has included a number of steering group meetings, the last of which is due to be held on Monday when both colleges will report back on whether or not they have decided to accept the recommendations. Barnsley College has already said it does intend to accept the merger.

Julie Kelley, University and College Union regional official for Yorkshire and Humberside, told the Chronicle the steering group process had been a ‘sham’ and that she had serious concerns about the lack of transparency throughout the process.
