BARNSLEY residents are wasting money by never switching energy suppliers, a survey says.
The survey by Simply Switch, an energy comparison website, revealed that 15 per cent of people in Barnsley have never switched energy companies and that 62 per cent of Barnsley bill payers surveyed get their energy from one of the big six - British Gas, SSE, E.ON, Scottish Power, EDF and npower - despite them ranking at the bottom of the league, and just 42 per cent of Barnsley respondents had a smart meter installed.
Sticking to these suppliers, Simply Switch says, means bill payers are losing money in the process.
This is because most fixed rate energy deals will last between 12 and 18 months, and then switch to a standard variable tariff - the most expensive tariff available - so switching before this will save residents money.
