A MAN has been sentenced to six months in prison after racially abusing a foodbank volunteer.

Gareth Clayton, 38, of Nursery Street, Barnsley, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment across a five-month period when he appeared at Sheffield Crown Court.

According to a police report, the defendant verbally abused the victim, who worked at a Barnsley foodbank, on multiple occasions.

Witnesses were forced to intervene on two occasions after the defendant’s behaviour escalated.

Clayton also pleaded guilty to two charges of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause harassment.

He has been issued with a five-year restraining order to not contact the victim directly, indirectly, or through a third party.
