THE Barnsley Chronicle is opening a new bookshop on Monday.

The new shop, based at our offices in Church Street, is Barnsley's only independent bookshop.

Customers can browse many best-selling titles in store, but will also be able to browse more than half-a-million different books, CDs and DVDs, and order with free in-store delivery.

Heather Williams, of the shop, said: "Since the arrival of Amazon, two bookshops in Barnsley town centre have closed and there is no longer an independent bookshop.

"As our main reception and shop is used by local residents, we wanted to provide a bookshop that can service the needs of the local community; selling local books and promoting local authors and working with schools, colleges and libraries, in an effort to help bring books back into the local community.

"We are aware there are lots of ways that people can buy books, without visiting an actual bookshop these days, but we are determined to focus on the face to face customer service aspects and opportunities that online services and supermarkets cannot provide."

The shop opens on Monday and will be open 9 until 5 during the week, closing at 4pm on Friday.
