A COUPLE who were stranded in the Caribbean following Hurricane Irma have described how they slept with a knife next to their bed to protect themselves from looters.

Liz Jackson and her partner Craig Guest were on holiday on the island of Saint Martin when the hurricane hit.

Their room was on the top floor of their hotel, which was devastated.

Liz, 33, an IT analyst from Stairfoot, said she and Craig, 37, were huddled in their en suite bathroom under a mattress and pillows as the walls and floors shook and the roof threatened to come off.

Speaking to the Chronicle from Puerto Rico, where they were evacuated to, Liz said: “We went into the bathroom and we knew something had happened, either a window or a door had come off. We heard the bang.

“We put the mattress on top of us because the tiles were coming off the walls. You could see the roof raise up and down. We were on the top floor and we knew if that roof came off, we would have been swept out.

“I phoned my mum and brother. I was in floods of tears - I thought we were going to die.”
