A 20-YEAR-OLD Barnsley lad with a string of convictions is appearing in a new TV show which aims to see if a spell in borstal can help reform young offenders.

Kyran Hopwood has faced charges ranging from theft and being drunk and disorderly to possessing an offensive weapon.

Now he is one of 14 youths appearing in ITV's primetime show 'Bring Back Borstal' which subjects trouble makers to life in a harsh, 1930s borstal-style boot camp.

Kyran said he was a bright pupil in his younger days but went off the rails when he was bullied at primary school.

Kyran decided to take part in the show because he though he would benefit from the structure and discipline provided at borstal.

* Episode three of the four part series will air on Thursday at 9pm.
