Barnsley conceded twice in injury-time in a 3-1 home loss to Fulham which saw Dimitri Cavare sent off just before the break with his side ahead.

Liam Lindsay's first goal for the Reds put them ahead after half an hour but Cavare was sent off on the stroke of half-time for shoving a Fulham player from behind.

Ryan Sessegnon levelled four minutes into the second half then the Reds did not really look threatened until injury-time when Kevin McDonald netted after a goalmouth scramble and Sessegnon secured the win.

Barnsley remain 19th in the league, two points above the relegation zone, but the sides below them will have the chance to dump them into the bottom three on Tuesday when they play their games in hand.

The match was the first one since the death of former owner Patrick Cryne earlier in the week and there was a minute's silence while the players wore black armbands and thousands of fans turned on their phone torches on 66 minutes.

Paul Heckingbottom made three changes to the side beaten 3-1 at Aston Villa a week earlier, while reverting to 4-4-2 from the 3-5-2 he used in the Midlands. Gary Gardner, who had been ineligible against Villa, came into the side along with Matty Pearson and Adam Hammill. Dropping out were injured centre-back Ethan Pinnock as well as Brad Potts and Jason McCarthy.

Barnsley started well with Stevie Mallan's 20-yard shot being pushed away from the top right corner in the third minute. An excellent move involving a Hammill backheel and good work by Gardner and Tom Bradshaw led to Moncur's shot hitting Kieffer Moore and being cleared. Moncur and Bradshaw also tried their luck from outside the box but missed the target.

Fulham's Norway international Stefan Johansen curled a free-kick well wide from 25 yards out then, at the other end, Moore flicked a long throw by Cavare onto the roof of the net.

The Reds eventually took a deserved lead on the 30th minute when Mallan's corner was touched towards goal by Tomas Kalas and, when Bettinelli kicked it clear, Lindsay turned it back into the net. Fulham thought Pearson was fouling their goalkeeper but the referee let the goal stand.

Cavare had been booked after 39 minutes for tripping a visiting player on the edge of the box then received a second yellow for shoving Johansen high up from behind after the Fulham man pushed Mallan.

The visitors levelled four minutes into the second half when right-back Ryan Fredericks skipped past two challenges and had a shot which hit the post and went straight to 17-year-old Sessegnon who fired in from close range.

Substitute Neeskens Kebano and McDonald both had wayward shots from the edge of the box. Home substitute Ryan Hedges skipped past several Fulham players before his shot was pushed away by Bettinelli while, at the other end, Davies did well to scoop away a Rui Fonte effort which looked destined for the bottom right corner.

McDonald then curled a 20-yard effort just over the bar and saw a close effort deflected into the arms of Davies.

McDonald was eventually credited with the winner in the 92nd minute after a frantic goalmouth scramble which saw Davies save an initial header from Kebano then claw the ball again off his line before it was ruled that he had pulled it back in from over the whitewash.

It was 3-1 in the 95th minute when Gardner missed a cross from the right and Sessegnon tapped in from five yards out.

AS IT HAPPENED17:00pm: FULL-TIME: Barnsley 1, Fulham 3.

16:59pm: A right-wing cross was missed by a sliding Lindsay and tapped in from close range

16:58pm: 90+5 Barnsley 1, Fulham 3. Sessegnon again

16:56pm: 90+2 Barnsley 1, Fulham 2. Kevin McDonald after a crazy goalmouth scramble

16:54pm: Five minutes of added time here

16:53pm: 89 Another McDonald effort is deflected and easily held by Davies. The goalkeeper is infuriating the away fans by constantly holding onto the ball on the floor after he gets it

16:51pm: Fulham have really struggled to break down the home defence even with their numerical advantage. Most of their efforts have been from long range

16:50pm: 86 McDonald comes close with a curling 25-yard effort which goes just over the bar

16:44pm: 81 Mamadou Thiam on for Kieffer Moore

16:43pm: 80 A cross from the right hits Fonte and looks to be going into the bottom right corner but Davies scrambles across to make a good save

16:42pm: 78 Ryan Hedges nearly scores what would have been the goal of his career as he skips past several defenders then has a shot from the edge of the box which is tipped away by the goalkeeper

16:39pm: 75 Barnsley are defending well but Fulham are having almost all of the ball. Can the hosts hang on?

16:34pm: 70 Kevin McDonald shoots wide from the edge of the box. Fulham haven't created as much as they threatened to in that early part of the second half

16:31pm: Fans around the ground (including the away end) are shining their phone lights for Patrick Cryne who died aged 66. The atmosphere has cranked up a few notches

16:29pm: 66 Adam Hammill is coming off to a big ovation. He was desperate to score for Patrick Cryne today but he is replaced by Ryan Hedges

16:29pm: 65 Substitute Kebano fires over from the left side of the box

16:29pm: It could be a case of hanging on for a point now for the Reds' ten men. Fulham have been well on top in the second half so far. 1-1

16:26pm: 63. Fulham's Piazon off for Kebano.

16:24pm: 60 Adam Davies already seems to be time-wasting, holding onto the ball for a long time when he catches it or when he takes goal kicks

16:20pm: 56 Liam Lindsay is booked for bringing down Fonte after the striker won the ball off him near the halfway line

16:16pm: Barnsley's good work for 45 minutes is in danger of all being for nothing

16:14pm: Fulham worked the ball down the right side then Davies saved an initial shot but the 17-year-old fired in from close range

16:13pm: 49 Barnsley 1, Fulham 1. Ryan Sessegnon levels

16:10pm: Fulham have also brought a debutant left-back on with Matt Targett replacing Denis Odoi

16:09pm: Daniel Pinillos is on for his Reds debut, with Tom Bradshaw being sacrificed

16:09pm: SECOND HALF UNDERWAY

15:54pm: Cavare was reacting to Johansen pushing Mallan, but he should know better.

15:52pm: HALF-TIME: Barnsley 1, Fulham 0. Liam Lindsay scored but Cavare has been sent off

15:51pm: It was crazy from Cavare, hitting a player from behind. He's left his team in big trouble now

15:51pm: It was a yellow card then a red card.

15:49pm: 45 RED CARD. Dimitri Cavare is sent off after collecting a second yellow card in six minutes for clashing off the ball with a Fulham player

15:45pm: Just a few minutes until half-time now. Still 1-0 Barnsley

15:43pm: 39 The free-kick is blocked by Gardner who is having a good game so far

15:42pm: 38 Cavare joins Hammill in the book for a foul on the edge of the box

15:41pm: That goal for Lindsay means the last four Barnsley have scored have all been by defenders

15:39pm: 36 Adam Hammill is booked for sliding in on Rui Fonte. It was a wild tackle

15:36pm: It's the Scottish centre-back's first goal in English football

15:36pm: It was a corner from Mallan which Lindsay met and, after goalkeeper Bettinelli saved with his feet, the same player turned in the rebound

15:34pm: 30 Barnsley 1 Fulham 0. Liam Lindsay

15:33pm: 30 Again nerves at the back for Fulham as Moore puts pressure on Ream who heads a long ball behind for a corner

15:31pm: 27 Bettinelli has to fling himself to his left to turn away a Gardner cross that looked as thought it could creep in. But the flag is up for offside against Moore who slid in to try and turn it in

15:27pm: 23 A quarter of the way through the match and Barnsley have been the better team so far. Moore has just floated a header from a Cavare throw onto the roof of the net

15:26pm: 22 Surprisingly Tom Bradshaw is the one flicking the ball on for Kieffer Moore and Bradshaw would have been through on goal had the return pass not been overhit

15:24pm: 20 George Moncur, playing on the right wing today, takes a tumble over some advertising hoardings but is OK

15:20pm: 16 Fulham's Norway international Stefan Johansen curls a free-kick well wide from 25 yards out

15:18pm: 14 Fulham look nervous at the back here. Moore almost robs Tim Ream in front of his box then goalkeeper Bettinelli's weak clearance is nearly pounced upon by Bradshaw. The Cottagers don't look like the side who have made the most passes in the league, with the best possession percentage and the top pass completion percentage.

15:14pm: The Reds are trying their luck from distance with Moncur and Bradshaw missing the target by some distance from well outside the box. Nothing of note from Fulham so far

15:13pm: 9 Barnsley put together a wonderful move involving an Adam Hammill back heel and good interplay between Gardner and Bradshaw before Moncur's 20-yard shot hits Moore, deflects up into the air and is cleared.

15:12pm: After a bright start for the Reds, the match and the atmosphere has settled down. 0-0 8 minutes in

15:08pm: So to recap on the team news: Gary Gardner, who had been ineligible against Villa, came into the side along with Matty Pearson and Adam Hammill. Dropping out were Ethan Pinnock as well as Brad Potts and Jason McCarthy.

15:07pm: 3 - Barnsley have the first chance of the match as Stevie Mallan's 25-yard effort is push away high by Bettinelli. It looks destined for the top corner.

15:06pm: Both fans wearing black armbands in honour of Mr Cryne

15:05pm: Good atmosphere here with the home fans constantly singing their former owner's name and the visiting fans also cheering on their side very loudly

15:04pm: WE'RE UNDERWAY

15:03pm: Well observed minute's silence and now the crowd are chanting 'Patrick Cryne, he's one of our own'

15:02pm: Impromptu round of applause as the announcer mentions Patrick Cryne as he introduces the minute's silence

14:59pm: Patrick Cryne's wife Jean and son James have taken their place in the directors' box along with current CEO Gauthier Ganaye and former CEO Ben Mansford

14:58pm: The teams are coming out onto the pitch now to a roar from the home crowd

14:56pm: As well as mourning their former owner, Barnsley are also working on bringing in new players in the January transfer window, which closes on Wednesday and has so far seen the arrival of Kieffer Moore from Ipswich Town and left-back Daniel Pinillos from Spanish second tier club Cordoba. Pinillos is on the bench today. French winger Harrison Manzala was at Oakwell for a medical and to discuss personal terms on Thursday but the move broke down later that day. They are still interested in signing at least one winger – with Bournemouth’s Conor Mahoney and Leicester’s Harvey Barnes on their radar – while they are also in the market for a striker and central midfield cover. They could go back in with a second bid for Oxford goalkeeper Simon Eastwood.

14:56pm: Today's matchday programme has a picture of Mr Cryne on the front and some emotional words from Paul Heckingbottom and poet Ian McMilland inside. McMillan wrote: As much as I love Barnsley, the football club and the town, I know that we are really a small place and that we shouldn't be able to compete with some of these big Championship clubs... the fact that we do is due in no small measure to Patrick Cryne

14:47pm: This match is the last one of a tricky January schedule which has also seen the Reds take on promotion hopefuls Wolves and Aston Villa. February looks much kinder as they face five teams in the bottom third of the table, starting with QPR and Sheffield Wednesday then a week of games against current bottom four sides Hull City, Burton Albion and Birmingham City.

14:38pm: While Fulham have a good recent record over the Reds, they have only won six times at Oakwell in 39 visits which have brought 23 defeats.

14:38pm: Barnsley lost 2-1 at Craven Cottage just five weeks ago on December 23 when Tom Bradshaw levelled midway through the second half but Sheyi Ojo won it four minutes later. The London club also did the double over the Reds last season while they have won four and drawn one of the five most recent meetings.

14:36pm: Fulham battered Burton Albion 6-0 on Saturday and are the second top-scorers in the division behind runaway leaders Wolves. No side in the league has more goals away from home this season than Fulham’s tally of 23.

14:25pm: Seventh-placed Fulham were actually below Barnsley just two months ago, but they are now 18 points and 12 places clear of the Reds after winning eight of their last 11 games including five wins and a draw from their last six which have brought 19 goals.

14:25pm: After beating Birmingham City 2-0 on November 4, Barnsley have not won at home in six matches and only scored one goal in that spell, although the last three games have all been drawn after three successive defeats at Oakwell. Only Birmimgham have scored fewer home goals in the Championship this season than Barnsley who have 12 in 14 matches this season.

14:13pm: Barnsley have won just once in their last 14 matches, in their New Year’s Day success at Sunderland. The Reds are currently 19th and two points clear of the relegation zone. None of the sides below them play today due to FA Cup ties but they are all in action on Tuesday which means Barnsley could slip into the relegation zone if results do not go their way this week.

14:05pm: After celebrating his 30th birthday on Thursday, Adam Hammill will be the first player in his 30s to play for the Reds since Peter Ramage appeared in a 1-1 draw at Notts County in 2015.

14:02pm: SUBS: Townsend, Potts, Thiam, McCarthy, Hedges, Pinillos, Brown

14:01pm: BARNSLEY TEAM: Davies; Cavare, Lindsay, Pearson, Yiadom; Moncur, Mallan, Gardner, Hammill; Bradshaw, Moore.

13:48pm: There is due to be a minute’s silence before kick-off to honour the man who saved the club from possible closure in 2003, while the players will wear black armbands.

13:47pm: Today is sure to be an emotional day for everyone connected to the club as it is the first game following the death of former Reds owner Patrick Cryne. The 66-year-old from Wombwell had been battling cancer for 15 months and sold 80 per cent of the club last month to a consortium.

13:39pm: Hello and welcome to the Chronicle's live coverage of Barnsley's home Championship game against Fulham
