THE first phase of a new blood centre offering specialist services in Barnsley has been completed.

The centre, at Capitol Park in Dodworth, is being opened by the NHS to support hospitals.

NHS Blood and Transplant |(NHSBT) said the new centre, at Capitol Park, Dodworth, would become a hub, and would allow staff to carry out their lifesaving work from a fit-for-purpose building.

The specialist services moving to Barnsley are all provided to hospitals and help match patients for blood, organ and stem cell transplants.

The new centre will replace centres in Leeds and Sheffield which will close by 2020, and will lead to improved services and save the NHS money.

The initial shell base built by Marshall Construction Ltd and The Harris Partnership is two storeys high and 38,800 square feet per floor.

It houses blood processing and administration functions with associated vehicle delivery and external parking areas on a self-contained area of the site.

NHSBT acquired the site at Dodworth next to J37 of the M1 for £5.5m in February to locate a regional blood centre combining its Leeds and Sheffield operations centrally in Yorkshire. Fitting out works will now be undertaken.
