FRESH hopes are emerging that Penistone market could enjoy a brighter future following a meeting between Barnsley Council staff and prospective new traders.

The landmark market hall in the town centre has been down to two regular market days, on Thursdays and Saturdays, since a twice weekly second-hand market stopped trading.

But markets officials have now met with existing traders and those with ideas to operate a series of new ventures at the building and it is hoped that will lead to a range of new attractions.

The meeting was set up with input from Coun Andrew Millner, the Mayor of Penistone, who said he was "delighted" with the outcome of the meeting.

He said there had been a constructive dialogue involving the council, traders and community but warned changes would not happen overnight.
