CAMPAIGNER Claire Throssell has been honoured at an awards evening following her journey in changing the way the legal system handles domestic abuse and family law courts.

She was awarded with the Special Recognition Award at the Yorkshire Choice Awards - which is an evening that celebrates local people and independent businesses across the county.

In 2014 Claire’s only sons, Jack and Paul, both died in a house fire that was started deliberately by their father.

Claire is currently campaigning to stop avoidable child deaths as a result of unsafe contact with dangerous perpetrators of domestic violence and making the family court process safer for survivors of domestic abuse.

“Claire’s story is one that no parent should ever go through,” said joint co-founder of the Yorkshire Choice Awards, Melanie Malcolm.

“She is an incredible lady, one that has shown immeasurable strength in her bid to change the way in which domestic abuse is handled in the courts, to ensure that the harrowing events that changed her life forever won’t be repeated again.

“Therefore, on behalf of the judges, we are delighted to award Claire this recognition.”

Due to Claire’s work there was a breakthrough where the government published a draft of the domestic abuse bill which will stop abusers from cross-examining victims during the court process.

Jo Maltby, another co-founder of the Yorkshire Choice Awards, said: “The awards celebrate achievement in Yorkshire and in its fourth year we are proud to have recognised the most inspirational individuals and businesses that our county has to offer.

“Being a ‘people’s choice awards’ shows that Yorkshire really does thrive on our community heroes, individuals like Claire.”
