A CAR enthusiast who had to stop driving after losing his sight got behind the wheel again for the first time in more than a decade.

Steve Waller was at the third annual Guide Dog's Blind Drive - where people who are visually impaired or blind are able to experience driving a car.

The 58-year-old brought along friends and his Labradoodle guide dog Evie to support him.

Steve, from Cliffe Road, Brampton, lost his sight after suffering from diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes.

He voluntarily gave up his driving licence 14 years ago when he could no longer drive safely and now relies on Evie to help him get out and about.

He said: "I used to drive around 80,000 miles a year when I was younger. I loved driving and cars in general and miss the sense of freedom it gave me. But as my sight deteriorated I gave up my licence and now it's just me and Evie."

The event was raised more than £11,000 for Guide Dogs.
