A TALENTED teenager from Staincross has won a place in the prestigious National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.

Charlotte Atkinson, 17, who plays cornet in Barnsley Metropolitan Band, had to audition to play with the band, which meets for week-long courses rather than weekly rehearsals, and Charlotte will be joining the Easter event.

She had already been invited to join last summer, but was unable to attend having already committed to performing in a concert tour of Germany with her own band.

During the week, at Taunton School in Somerset, Charlotte will be put through her paces by tutors from the highest level of brass banding, and it will culminate in two concerts at Cheltenham Town Hall and Wells Cathedral on April 6 and 7.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” said former Darton College pupil Charlotte, of Austwick Close, Staincross, who has been playing the cornet since she was seven.

“I auditioned the day after my GCSEs finished last summer but I couldn’t go because of our German tour.

“I’m hoping it will help develop my skills and my confidence, and help improve my playing and performance at band.”

Charlotte is currently studying A levels at New College, Pontefract, and hopes to follow a musical path at university and in a career.

“I have no idea what I want to do yet, just something in music,” she said.
