THE controversial Civic clock which hasn’t worked for years will not be fixed unless members of the public or wealthy backers decide to pay for it themselves, the Chronicle has learned.

The clock cost £32,500 when it was installed in 2008. It was supposed to be an alternative representation of a clock featuring about 20,000 tiny light bulbs, although people complained it was difficult to read.

Three red lines of light snaked their way around a huge rectangular track on the side of the building overlooking Mandela Gardens - the longest line represented the minute hand, the shorter one the hour hand, and a dot represented the seconds.

Civic chief executive Helen Ball stopped short of saying it would ‘never’ be fixed, but that the Civic had other projects it wished to invest in, raise funds for or apply for grants for which were much more pressing priorities.
