MORE than £1m will be poured into Royston’s former coke works to bring some employment use back to the area.

Demolition work has been ongoing at Monckton, off Lund Hill Lane, after site owners Hargreaves pulled the plug on its coke-making facility - which employed 130 people - in December 2014.

The Chronicle revealed earlier this month that the Durham-based firm had submitted a plan to Barnsley Council to create a power plant on part of the site and a spokesman said this week that its other ambition to build a housing development - which could be up to 450 homes - is still on the agenda.

However, residents’ thoughts have played a ‘key role’ in shaping Hargreaves’ proposals for the rest of the land, and the seven-figure investment will see some of its employees returning to use the site as a base.
