A COMMUNITY garden could be created near Hoyland town centre as local concern grows about the number of houses which could be developed.

Barnsley Council's Local Plan, which will shape planning policy up to 2033, is currently under consultation but in it sites have been earmarked which could accommodate nearly 3,000 houses locally.

Now two Hoyland women want to create the garden on a bit of wasteland at the back of Belmont Working Men's Club to offset the issue.

Alison Richardson and Charlotte Oughton even plan to ask TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall if he can help.

Alison, known for her fundraising in Hoyland, and Charlotte who runs the Allotment Deli in the Hoyland Centre, have approached the club on West Street, which owns the site about the move.

Alison and Charlotte say their 'green garden' project is their own small way of offsetting the housing development planned for Hoyland.
