PLANS to drive up standards of private rented homes across Barnsley and improve living conditions for tenants will be the subject of a ten-week consultation starting next week.

The council wants to bring in selective licensing for parts of Measbrough Dike, Elsecar, Wombwell and Goldthorpe which would require landlords to apply for a licence and meet a series of conditions to make sure they provide good and well managed housing.

Cabinet members agreed to go ahead with the consultation on the scheme which is designed to raise the standards of homes and tenant conditions but also address significant and persistent problems of antisocial behaviour linked to areas of dense private housing.
