A FOOTBALLER struck down by a rare syndrome is hoping to get back on the pitch.

Aaron Tate, 24, is now undergoing intense physiotherapy to get him back fighting fit, after collapsing last month.

He was diagnosed with rare Guillain Barre Syndrome, which causes the immune system to attack the body.

He spent five days sedated and supported by breathing apparatus, undergoing a tracheotomy.

But the semi-pro footballer, from Wombwell, who played for Frickley, is now working towards a return home to his pregnant partner Charlotte Hayes, his son Addison and to his sport.

Speaking from Kendray Hospital, Aaron said: "I have two physio appointments a day and an occupational therapist once a day. I've progressed every day since I've been here, which is good for my personal self-esteem.

"It is great motivation for me as I have another baby coming in the next seven weeks, so I have a bit of a deadline to work to, to get home as soon as I can.

"I have got a good structure because rest is as important as work with my syndrome, as I could overdo it, it could kick in again and be a backwards step."

Aaron, who is signed to both Wombwell Main and Westville FC in West Melton, said he hopes to get back in the game later this season. Next month, the Azza Tate Day has been organised by both teams and will see a special match and music concert held to fundraise for his family.
