A FORMER medical director and consultant at Barnsley Hospital believes ‘not all healthcare’ should be provided free by the NHS.

Crispin Swinhoe, who worked at as a consultant anaesthetist at Barnsley Hospital for 19 years, makes the claim in his memoirs.

He says while the most serious illnesses should always be treated without charge, he believes those who can afford to pay should not have free access to all treatments if they are not ‘lifesaving’.

“It’s quite controversial, I realise,” said Crispin, 59, who retired last year.
