Paul Heckingbottom has stressed that the the first two pre-season fixtures are important for ensuring players are up to speed.

Barnsley's pre-season matches get underway with tomorrow's trip to Stalybridge Celtic and Heckingbottom sees it as an extension of the fitness work the players have already completed at the training ground.

The head coach said: "We want to see little tactical elements and the little triggers that we have been working on in pre-season.

"The players are looking forward to playing.

"They have had lots of tough sessions. This is a chance to see them physically, technically and tactically."

The Reds played at Stalybridge last season and won 1-0 courtesy of an own goal.

"We saw that they were a good side last year," he added.

"They have got energy and will be competitive. It will help us build into our pre-season."

The Reds will also travel to non-league opposition on Tuesday with a 7.30pm kick off at Guiseley. Heckingbottom feels the Leeds club will help his side take their preparations up another notch.

"That is a step-up because they have a lot of quality," he added.

"I know their manager Mark Bower well from Bradford and they will try and pass the ball around.

"They have got a lot of plaudits for that. The games fit into our programme.

"It is going to be a really tough week."

The game at Stalybridge will be Barnsley fans' first chance to see new signings George Moncur, Elliot Lee, Kayden Jackson, Andy Yiadom and Stefan Payne. It was also the place where the likes of Marc Roberts and Marley Watkins made their debuts for the club last season.
